Recall of FreshKon Airis 1-Month contact lenses

18 Nov 2011

Subsequent to the announcement of the total recall of Avaira contact lenses this Wednesday, the Department of Health (DH) today (November 18) endorsed the recall of another product, FreshKon Airis 1-Month contact lenses, by its local distributor Oculus Optical (H.K.) Co., Ltd.

A DH spokesman said the recall was necessary as additional information from CooperVision Hong Kong revealed that Avaira was also marketed by another company as FreshKon Airis 1-Month in Singapore, with products imported to Hong Kong and distributed by Oculus Optical (H.K.) Co., Ltd. since March this year.

Oculus Optical (H.K.) Co., Ltd. today confirmed that certain lots of FreshKon Airis 1-Month were also affected by the same defect as that found in Avaira, that is, the presence of silicone oil residue which may cause hazy vision or discomfort, severe eye pain and even eye injuries.

Although it was reported that only certain lots were affected, in view of possible consumer safety concern and to avoid market confusion, a total recall of FreshKon Airis 1-Month contact lenses is considered a prudent measure.

Oculus Optical (H.K.) Co., Ltd. has set up a hotline at 2561 6732 to answer enquiries.

"Members of the public should cease using the product if they feel unwell, and consult their healthcare providers. DH will continue to liaise with CooperVision Hong Kong and overseas regulatory authorities to closely monitor the situation and check if there are other affected products being sold in Hong Kong," the spokesman said.
